Multiplayer online role-playing games like Second Life, Sims, EverQuest and World of Warcraft are big business. They allow users to assume alternate identities through the use of avatars and interact with each other virtually, often across international borders in real-time. Online gaming is an intriguing activity, but what are the costs to the gamers themselves and society at large? Is gaming addiction real, and do gaming companies have a responsibility to their users?

David Lewis is an award-winning journalist, filmmaker and book editor. He currently works as a Datebook editor at the San Francisco Chronicle. Before that, he worked at the San Jose Mercury News, where he shared a Pulitzer Prize given to the staff. Lewis’s films, including Rock Haven (2007), have played at film festivals around the world. His latest, Redwoods, won the prestigious Iris Prize in Europe this past fall. In addition to his film and newspaper work, he is a writing coach for novelists.
