New York City is tough on the young. Recent film and television depictions vacillate between nihilistic angst and downward spirals of excess, and the privileged Gossip Girls who grow into the materialistic Carrie Bradshaws and Samantha Joneses of the island, gravitating toward their cosmos, Manolos and CEOs. The feature debut of multi-hyphenate Josh Radnor, star of the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, shirks the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll allure of Manhattan’s hipster stomping grounds for an old-fashioned dose of youthful optimism and social responsibility—while keeping wind of those perennial struggles that have the twentysomething set flocking to, and fleeing from, one of the world’s most expensive, competitive and chaotic cities. Radnor wrote, directed and also stars as Sam Wexler, a struggling writer living on the Lower East Side who strikes up a touching friendship with Rasheen, a lost child he meets on the subway. Sam’s social orbit includes a wide-eyed, lovelorn philanthropist suffering from an autoimmune disorder, a couple arguing over a potential move to Los Angeles to benefit his film career, and a sexy bartender named Mississippi who harbors dreams of singer/songwriter superstardom. Don’t expect snark and cynicism here. happythankyoumoreplease occupies its own winsome, weary-eyed terrain, capturing a generational moment in Manhattan’s booming post-9/11 Bloomberg years when going out, growing up and getting it just right—romantically, professionally and otherwise—supersedes the clichéd casual sex and power plays of the high-thread-count-sheet set.
