Don Hertzfeldt’s short animations cover a wide and anxious terrain. Representing an ongoing project to present a chaotic and hilarious worldview, these short films describe nothing less than the cycle of life itself (not to mention the worrisome problems inevitably brought about by gargantuan utensils). Combining line drawing with superimpositions, lighting effects and collage, Hertzfedlt lucidly renders the absurd vagaries of life on planet earth, and sometimes elsewhere, through painstakingly detailed processes he makes look deceptively simple. Tonight’s collection, presented in person by Hertzfeldt, will include Intermission in the Third Dimension as well as other past works including I am so proud of you and a few new surprises. Questions from the audience will follow. Life and death may be on the table for discussion as well. SFIFF is proud to present these first forays in the still-evolving career of a maverick animator.
